Hornsey v Harrow Cricket Club Saturday 1st XI on Sat 18 Jun 2011 at 1300
Match was Drawn
Match report
On a day when most other matches were completely washed out, the Harrow v Hornsey game somehow managed to avoid the heaviest downpours as dark clouds swirled around the ground for most of the day. Winning the toss (for once!) thanks to the expert calling of Morris, Harrow had no hesitation in asking Hornsey to bat first on a damp green wicket. The poor catching that has blighted Harrow's season allowed Hornsey to reach the relative comfort of 55-1 in the 18th over. That was a cue for the spin pairing of Ajay Patdiwala & Tushaar Karia to turn the screw as they have been doing for the past few games. Only 30 runs came off the next 22 overs as wickets started to fall regularly. At 110-8 off 45 overs, the game looked over, but again some more poor catching allowed Hornsey to scramble to 156 all out. In total 7 clear chances went down and allowed Hornsey to get 50 more than they should have. Patdiwala (21-4-53-3) and Tushaar Karia (14-5-20-1) proved very difficult for the Hornsey batsmen to get away, whilst Avinash Karia polished off the tail, taking the last four wickets to finish with 4-35.
In reply Hornsey opened with left arm spin of Patel (6-63) who used the conditions perfectly, bowling with good dip, turn and a truly deadly arm ball. He removed the first three batsmen in quick succession as Harrow limped to 40-5 off 17 overs. Enter Darren Crook, fresh from a trip down to the chemist for some pills to combat a dose of tonsillitis. With calmness and a few close calls, the lower order supported him well to edge Harrow closer to the winning draw target of 132. At 116-9 and with 8 overs to go it was left to Richard Bennison to bat with great calmness and support Crook. Having secured the 4 points with 8 balls to go, both players batted calmly to assure the result. Crook finished with a superb man of the match 57 not out, which was the highest score by any batsman in the match.
