Match report
Harrow CC U14s Finals Day 4th September 2016
Semi Final – Harrow CC Vs Barnes
All Harrow CC U14s were the first team to turn up at Sunbury and were the last ones to leave. It was great to see the entire squad turn up on time and ‘ready for action’. Great start! - What then transpired was a script from a marvel comic. As usual with this squad they listen and Kevan and Anil took them through a tried and trusted ‘warm up’ routine whereby we incorporate all aspects of the game. John the Sunbury coach and organizer was impressed with the routine but commented that ‘don’t leave the best bits on the training field’ save it for the match!
Things started to turn for the worse, during the ‘warm up’ one of our star players Krushal went over his ankle and could hardly walk. First aid and words of encouragement were offered - Kev even said ‘head up mate - you will be needed in the final!
Second disappointment was that our start time was brought forward to 12:45 and we were informed that it would be 15 overs a side - not ideal as our strength is our bowling and fielding. We then preceded to lose the toss and was inserted to bat, not our best strength. Harrow got off to the worst start possible, you couldn’t even imagine! Seeing the score at 2-3 in the first over. John the organizer on his first circuit around the filed comments “not great start coach”!! . Kev and I remained tight lipped. Kev was ready to close the book and stop scoring at 18-5 in 4 overs, he wanted to go. John on his second circuit comments “only one winner here now” - I advised him that we had reversed the batting order and that we wanted to create a false sense of security and then strike! (NOT TRUE)!!!
It couldn’t get worst we thought!!, Our U14s have the desire to win and there is always someone to put up their hand to help the team when needed- Aashir Rifat (27) and Iritiza Bangash (35) put on a timely 44 run partnership, with great running between the wickets and hitting boundaries off any loose balls on offer. Harrow were now 69-6 after 12 overs and we felt 90 runs could be defendable with the strength of our bowling attack. Tail-enders did a sterling job and converted ones into twos and bad balls dispatched. Harrow finished their innings 89-9 in 15 overs, how they reached there we don’t know, but the belief, support and willingness from players, coaches and parents was amazing throughout the day.
After a quick discussion in the changing room, about bowling the right lines and sticking to our bowling strategy of opening with spinners and quick turnaround between overs to keep the pressure on. Harrow took to the field; the momentum gained from the batting continued into the second half of the game. Harrow restricted Barnes to 19-2 after 5 overs and that quickly turned to 38-5 after 10 overs. Superb bowling figures from Dhiyan Bhanderi (3-1-4-2), who has been immense this season bowling very consistently and in the right channels. Arjun Banerjee also had a great day behind the stumps taking two stumping’s and two catches throughout the day and mainly standing up to most of our bowlers. Scoreboard pressure and loss of wickets at crucial intervals caused Barnes to panic and Harrow won the game by 18 runs, Barnes finished 71-10 in 14.2 overs. This was one of the best fight backs we have ever seen and one we will remember and treasure for a long time. Harrow CC U14s showed us today, to never stop believing you’re out of the game; it’s your own destiny if you believe in each other.
