Match report One of the expectedly tense games of the season between perennial rivals Harrow and Stanmore.
Harrow CC won the toss and opted to field first.
Stanmore Innings- A tight bowling spell to initiate an impassioned match with Yashas bowling exceptional line and length. Some excellent bounce on the ball which was responded to with elegant offside shots from ostentatious batsman Ayaan who hit an incredible 31 runs. Arun was the second opening bowler, with some good spin and pace pressurising the batsman. Arun took the crucial wicket of big hitter Neharen and consequently ended his third over from the opposite end with a tight and efficacious opening spell. Ved and Zayn were bowled as first change and went for economically expensive first overs. However, they stepped up with stylish flourish to take three wickets in the next two overs, Ved dismissing both Ayaan with a beautiful slower yorker and Shivraj with an excellent catch from Abdulwaalee, while Zayn dismissed in form batsman Aryian Mitra with what was frankly the catch of the match from U11 player Salman on second attempt. Dilan and Jesse stayed in with a superb partnership to shape Stanmore’s innings and though there was a controversial direct hit from Ved which was later denied, the two batsmen played with a confident demeanour. Yash took the wicket of Jesse, bowled, on 21 but Dilan remained unbeaten on 41 of 30. Stanmore’s final score was 143. A valiant bowling effort, however Harrow’s pace bowlers were in turn quite expensive- a diminishing factor that the team will have to work on.
Harrow Innings- A superb start from the Stanmore opening bowlers with unplayable line and length. Arun looked in impeccable form hitting two fours but was caught on 10 runs of a quick short ball from Jesse. Yashas played a tough innings and was caught behind by Shivraj off a beautiful delivery from Jesse. Zayn was unlucky to get another beauty on his first ball and another nick was collected by the safe gloves of Shivraj. Rahul and Ved then built a good partnership which took Harrow from 18 for 3 to 90 for 3 in under 15 overs. Rahul was eventually out to a superb catch off Aryian Mitra’s bowling by Dilan for a stroke filled 46 and Ved Nair followed on the next ball, LBW, for a valiant 25 runs. It looked very hard for Harrow to win it back but some amazing batting from Yash and Abdulwaalee, scoring 14 and 15 individually took them within striking distance before Abdulwaalee was run out in an attempt for a quick single. The fast prevailing darkness and some sublime rear-end pace bowling from Neharen and Jesse, eventually restricted Harrow to 137 despite some valiant batting.
Unlucky for Harrow but a learning stage, specifically for the batsmen and pace bowlers, all in all a dramatic match, to say at the least.
